DESIGNING WITH HOUSEPLANTS
1. Cut the leaves 24 hours after it has been watered.
2. Use sharp clippers, Japanese ikebana scissors, or jack knife to cut your stems. Wipe clippers or knife blades with an alcohol swab to remove any bacteria before use.
3. Cut foliage at a 45 degree angle and cut as long as possible. Immediately place into a clean, sanitized bucket of warm water with floral preservatives. The sooner the stems get into water the stronger they will be. Hydrate for 2-4 hours. Foliage to consider: Alocasia, Anthurium, Calathea, Aspidistra, Croton, Diffenbachia, Fatsia, Spathiphyllum, Cordyline, Dracena and Philodendron.
4. After hydration is complete…Arrange your flowers:
a. Don’t overcrowd your stems in the design.
b. Replace water daily. Discard old water with fresh.
c. Keep floral design out of direct sunlight and cold drafts.
d. If stems wilt…they may need to be re-cut and/or discarded.
5. Some cut houseplant material does not need to be hydrated and may be used without a water source. Plant Materials to consider: Agave, Rubber Plant, Bromeliads, Crassula, Haworthia, Kalenchoe, Rhipsalis, Sedum, Ric Rac Cactus and Tillandsia.
